Kenall addressed life safety, fire, and code compliance concerns for four schools in the Houston Independent School District: Blanche K. Bruce Elementary School, Hamilton Elementary School, Scarborough Elementary School, and Lee High School. The architectural solutions implemented were tailored to meet local jurisdictional requirements and enhance overall safety and accessibility. These efforts ensured compliance with local, state, and federal building codes by adhering to structural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing standards, as well as obtaining all necessary permits.
Life safety modifications included the installation of fire protection systems such as sprinklers, fire alarms, and portable extinguishers, following NFPA standards and Houston Fire Department guidelines, along with emergency lighting, illuminated exit signs, and clear egress pathways for safe evacuation during emergencies. ADA compliance was achieved through accessible routes like ramps, elevators, and wide doorways, as well as improvements to restroom facilities and classrooms to accommodate individuals with disabilities.
In addition to these upgrades, Kenall implemented safety training programs for staff and students to promote emergency preparedness, established routine maintenance schedules for safety equipment and accessible features, and collaborated with local authorities to ensure ongoing compliance and to address any emerging safety concerns.
